The 2017 Kia Sorento, a midsize SUV, has earned a Top Safety
Pick Plus rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety thanks to a
top superior rating for the performance of its optional front crash prevention
system with automatic emergency braking.
That's a step up from the 2016 model, which was an IIHS Top
Safety Pick but offered only a front collision warning and did not qualify for
the highest Top Safety Pick Plus status.
To get the highest
rating, the 2017 Sorento earned the highest score of good in IIHS
crashworthiness tests: the small overlap front crash, moderate overlap front
crash, side crash, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. The 2016
Sorento also received good scores in these crashworthiness tests.
IIHS said the Sorento's new automatic emergency braking
system successfully stopped the vehicle before impact in both the 12-mph and
25-mph track tests.
The 2017 Sorento rating matches its midsize SUV rival, the
2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport — also rated a Top Safety Pick Plus — and it bests
the 2016 Ford Edge, which earned
ratings of good in all categories but the small overlap front crash test, where
it received an acceptable rating. Its front crash prevention system earned the
lowest score of basic.
To earn a Top Safety Pick Plus award, a car must receive the
top score of good in all IIHS crash tests and offer a front crash prevention
system that receives a rating of advanced or superior. To receive a Top Safety
Pick award, which is IIHS' second-tier honor, a car must pass all crash tests
with good scores and have a basic-rated front crash prevention system.
